Slovenian Paper Flowers

Date

This exhibit premiered on June 5, 2024.

Description

This exhibition, organized by the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, Ljubljana, explores the making of paper flowers as an important element of Slovenian cultural heritage. In the mid-1800s, rural woman started creating them as an affordable substitute for real flowers, working together in groups to socialize and pass down crafting skills to younger generations.

Paper flowers were most popular in the years between World War I and World War II, when they were used to decorate almost every imaginable festival and important rite of passage, including first communions, weddings, anniversaries, funerals, and holidays like Christmas, Palm Sunday, and carnival.

Today, paper flowers are enjoying a revival as contemporary Slovenes—and Slovenian Americans—try their hand at making them, reinventing an old custom and connecting with one another in the process.
