“Easter Eggs from Bela Krajina— Belokranjske pisanice”

Date

This exhibit premiered on Thursday, April 19, 2018.

Description

This exhibition explored the history of intricately decorated Easter eggs, or pisanice, in Bela Krajina, a region in the far southeast of Slovenia. There, residents began preparing for Easter in the winter time. For the intricate work of traditional egg painting, they used beeswax, a special writing tool called a pisalka, a candle, red and black dye, and a lot of patience. The eggs were made mainly by women, who gave them to the men they fancied—and also to their godfathers and friends.
