Angels by Lučka Koščak, Slovenian Sculptor

Date

This exhibit premiered on September, 22, 2022

Description

Part of Slovenian Days in Cleveland 2022, this exhibition explored the work of noted Slovenian sculptor Lučka Koščak (1957–2022) by showcasing a series of intimate terra-cotta busts she called “Angels.” At first glance, these quiet figures, now in the collection of the artist’s family, challenge our traditional expectations about what an angel should look like—they’re not airborne, and they certainly don’t have wings, billowing robes, or chubby little legs. Instead, with their closed eyes and meditative feel, they evoke a feeling of contemplation and peace that’s at once spiritual and very human, and that the artist worked to share with viewers in many of her monumental sculptures as well.
